Getting permanent residence; 3 conditions for highly skilled migrants

Do you currently hold a highly skilled migrant residence permit, and have lived for at least 5 years in the Netherlands, then this article is for you!

Highly skilled migrants who have lived in the Netherlands for a long time eventually settle permanently here. After long employment with the company, who also acts as a sponsor, they no longer want to depend on the employer when it comes to staying in the Netherlands. You might lose your job, for instance. But more importantly; whether you lose your job or not, after living in the Netherlands for many years, where you are now starting to feel at home, you do not want your life, and that of your family, to depend on a job. After all, life is more than a job.

Having a permanent residence permit has many advantages. One of the most important is that you are no longer dependent on a (recognised) sponsor. With a permanent residence permit you don’t need a sponsor, and apart from that, you don’t have to meet the salary criterion for highly skilled migrants. The new salary criterion for the year 2023 has been published by the Immigration and Naturalisation Services. A highly skilled migrant aged 30 years and above must have an income of at least EUR 5.008 excl. 8% holiday allowance per month. Below you can see what the minimum income is for a holder of the permanent residence permit. This wage is based on the social minimum in the Netherlands and applies to everyone. These are just some of the advantages of having permanent residence.

The question remains what are the main conditions if you want to change your current residence permit to a permanent residence permit:

1. Uninterrupted legal residence of 5 years

2. Passing the integration exam at A2 level

3. Income requirement: employment contract of at least six months with a gross monthly salary of at least EUR 1,229.34.

Your family members can also apply for permanent residence. In that case, your partner must also meet the conditions. For the income requirement, other conditions can apply, depending on your partner’s work history.
